Flame arrester, type Detonation (in-line, horizontal), is designed to handle detonations in pipelines. A detonation occurs when a flame traveling through a pipeline reaches supersonic velocity (above the speed of sound).
The detonation flame arrester contains a flame element, designed to be three to four times larger than the diameter of the pipe in which it i installed. The flame element consists of rolls of crimped stainless steel that form passages for the gas in the pipe. The area of each passage determines the level of protection provided by the flame arrester and type, Detonation (in-line, horizontal), has a MESG (Maximum Experimental Safe Gap) as standard. This makes it suitable for gas groups IIB and IIA.
Detonation flame arresters are more robust than our Deflagration flame arresters and can withstand higher pressure which is required to extinguish detonations. It must be installed in pipelines with a significant distance between the unit and the potential ignition source.
