Type, Deflagration (in-line, vertical), is a flame arrester intended for installation in gas pipelines or on vessels. Here they protect against flames flashbacks by minimizing the flame velocity and the development of explosive pressure.
The flame arrester contains a flame element designed to be three or four times larger than the diameter of the pipe in which it is installed. The flame element consists of rolls of crimped stainless steel assembled between to flanged reducing spools. These steel rolls form passages through which gas and vapor can pass. The size of the passages determines the protection level of the flame arrester and type, Deflagration (in-line, vertical) has a MESG (Maximum Experimental Safety Gap) as standard. This makes it suitable for gas group IIB and IIA.
During normal operation, the flame element allows bi-directional flow of gas and vapor. If a fire occurs outside the system and ignites the combustible content of the pipeline, the flame will begin to move back through the pipeline but will be extinguished by the flame arrester as it attempts to pass the flame element.
Type, Deflagration (in-line, vertical), is suitable for extinguishing subsonic flames, that move at the speed of sound and should be mounted in a vertical plane close to potential sources of ignition.
