Timber industry
In the timber industry, a significant amount of processes can, under certain circumstances, cause fires and explosions. In milling processes, concentrations of dust, vapor and gas pose a threat of causing a fire or an explosion, if exposed to an ignition source. The processing of wood and timber produces dust and shavings and the milling of wood and timber can produce formaldehyde and ammonia vapors which stems from adhesives.
In order to minimise the risk of fire and explosion-related incidents, existing and new organisations are required to undertake initiatives aimed at increasing the security of employees, production facilities as well as structures. The minimum of these initiatives is described in the European Union’s ATEX directive.
