The processing of plastic often entails processes wherein the material is heated, transported, moulded and inflected. Products made of plastic contain flammable substances and explosive concentrations of dust, can occur in its processing. Many of the processes in plastic manufacturing has a risk of developing fires and explosions in ventilation, filters and bending machines.

In order to minimise the risk of fire and explosion-related incidents, existing and new organisations in the plastics industry are required to undertake initiatives aimed at increasing the security of employees, production facilities as well as structures. The minimum of these initiatives is described in the European Union’s ATEX directive.
